Rose Cardamom Hot Cocoa

Prep time: 2 min
Cook time: 10 min

This twist on simple hot chocolate is more complex and flavorful. Because it uses oat milk, you can enjoy it while keeping most kidney-restricted nutrients quite low.

Makes

2 servings

Serving size

1 cup

Ingredients

2 cups oat milk

½ teaspoon cardamom, ground

3 tablespoons brown sugar

¼ cup cocoa powder, unsweetened

1 tablespoon rose water

Crushed rose petals for garnish (optional, not included in nutrient analysis)

Instructions

  1. Combine milk, cardamom, brown sugar, and cocoa powder into a small saucepan over medium-high heat.
  2. Whisk to thoroughly combine.
  3. Cook until milk forms bubbles on the edges, about 3 to 5 minutes.
  4. Reduce the heat and simmer for 2 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and set aside for 1 to 2 minutes.
  6. Add the rose water and stir to fully incorporate.
  7. Divide the hot chocolate into two cups or mugs.
  8. Serve with a sprinkle of crushed rose petals as garnish (if using).

Cooking Tip

Take care not to let the milk come to a rolling boil or it will spill over the pot onto the stove.
