German Braised Cabbage

Prep time: 15 min
Cook time: 15 min

The tanginess of German-style braised cabbage comes from the addition of apple cider vinegar. This pale gold vinegar is made from fermented apples and has a complex, slightly sweet flavor that enhances the ingredients of this popular side dish.

Apple cider vinegar is a current diet trend because it is thought to have many health benefits. Cider vinegar has long been claimed to help detoxify the body and is a natural diuretic, so it supports kidney health, digestion, and liver function.

Cooking Tip

Green cabbage is often the more prevalent variety in supermarkets, so don’t despair if you can’t find a red one. Green will work fine in this recipe— you just won’t get that glorious deep maroon color that looks so inviting on the dinner table.

To make this recipe vegan, simply swap sugar for organic sugar instead.
