Cajun Chicken Burgers

Ground chicken burgers are a wholesome alternative to ground beef and equally tasty prepared on the stove top or grill. Use the no sodium Cajun seasoning to add a flavorful kick.

Ingredients for No Sodium Cajun Seasoning (makes ¼ cup)
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon onion powder
2 teaspoons paprika
½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
½ teaspoon black pepper
½ teaspoon chili powder
¼ teaspoon celery seed
Ingredients for Burgers
1 pound ground chicken
1 teaspoon no sodium Cajun seasoning
½ cup onion, finely diced
1 tablespoon mayonnaise
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 avocado, pitted, peeled and sliced (optional, not used in nutritional analysis)
Dollop of spicy brown mustard, for serving (optional, not used in nutritional analysis)
Instructions
Directions for No Sodium Cajun Seasoning
- Combine all ingredients and store in an airtight jar away from heat and light.
Directions for Burgers
- Line a plate with waxed or parchment paper.
- Combine the ground chicken, Cajun seasoning, onion and mayonnaise in a large bowl.
- Dampen hands with water and form ground chicken mixture into 5 patties and place on prepared plate.
- Heat the oil in a large non-stick sauté pan over medium heat. Cook the burgers until browned and an internal temperature reaches 165°F, 5 minutes per side. If necessary, reduce heat to medium-low, cover and continue cooking burgers to required temperature.
- Top burgers with sliced avocado and a dollop of mustard.
Cooking Tip
For grilling, be sure to clean and oil the grill generously so the burgers do not stick. A touch of mayonnaise keeps these burgers juicy and moist while the onions and homemade no sodium Cajun seasoning ramp up the flavor. Leave off the avocado for a lower potassium version.
