For Professionals

Where can one obtain a list of food items to avoid and items that are ok to eat?

There really isn’t such a blanket yes/no food list for CKD. Which is a good thing, but can be frustrating. Most foods can be incorporated at any stage of kidney disease, but the amount will vary. The specific nutrients to limit or increase are highly individualized. For example, in later stage CKD before dialysis, protein is limited, but after starting dialysis, protein is increased to offset losses with the dialysis process. Working with a dietitian can help provide personalized recommendations for nutrients and how to combine those foods into your eating pattern. One food to limit in later stages of CKD and dialysis is starfruit. Overall limiting animal proteins, especially those that are highly processed (bacon, salami, etc), is recommended as they contribute to acid load and inflammation. If you know what nutrients you need to limit or increase, you can filter the recipes on the Kidney Kitchen recipe page based on nutrients.
