What type of bread (whole wheat, whole grain or white) is recommended? Are bananas okay?

I recommend whole grain, whole wheat or multigrain bread for people with kidney disease. Be careful to check the sodium in whatever bread you buy. Bread is a surprising source of salt! Historically, white bread was recommended because it has less phosphorus in it. However, we now know that the phosphorus in whole grains like whole grain bread, beans, nuts, seeds and lentils isn’t very well absorbed in our body. So, it is best to choose whole grains more often for all that extra fiber! Bananas are high in potassium. But, not everyone with kidney disease needs to limit potassium. In fact, a high potassium diet is good for many people with kidney disease. Ask your dietitian what your potassium needs are. Even if you do need to limit how much potassium you eat and love bananas, these higher potassium foods can likely fit in a plan for you!
