What kind of food can I eat while I’m on dialysis?

Honestly you can eat almost any food when on dialysis. When living with dialysis your everyday food choices may seem extremely limited however most foods can fit. The key is being mindful of the nutrients in the food your eating and managing portion size. By cooking at home, limiting portions of high potassium foods (if your potassium is high), choosing more fruits and vegetables that are lower in potassium, choosing lean proteins – including beans, not adding salt and avoiding/limiting added phosphorus you can have a wide variety. It is important to limit added salt, fat, added phosphorus and fluids in your daily eating pattern. Many restaurants, fast foods, and snack foods have added phosphorus, salt and fat so cooking at home is an excellent way to stay in control. Finding recipes used to be a chore but the Kidney Kitchen by the AKF has over 650 recipes to choose from. They are tasty, healthful recipes you can trust. It is important to remember to talk with your dietitian and doctor for any specific restrictions you may need to follow.
