What are good protein food and fluid sources for a diabetic person on dialysis who can’t chew well? Are nutritional shakes OK?

- Linda J,

Utah

It can be difficult to get enough protein with problems chewing! You could try to modify your usual foods to get enough protein. This way, you can still enjoy your favorite foods and flavors. I also always prefer people get nutrition from food first whenever possible! For example, use ground or shredded chicken instead of a whole piece of chicken. Eggs are also a good, soft, protein choice. But, if you do need to supplement with a protein powder or supplement, be careful to look for how much sodium, phosphorus and potassium (if your potassium labs are high) is in it. Some of these products can be quite high! Ask your dietitian what specific protein powder is right for you and if this is necessary for you!
