Is a plant-based diet good for people with kidney disease?

A plant based diet can be great for kidney disease. Plant proteins are less inflammatory than animal proteins and provide fiber which can help with digestion. The phosphorus in plant foods is less absorbed than meats or processed foods.

A plant based diet is often higher in potassium, so working with a Renal Dietitian can help you know with how to combine plant based foods to maintain safe potassium levels. Kidney Kitchen (link) has great recipes for plant based foods and can be filtered based on other nutrient needs such as potassium, sodium and phosphorus to help you get started.
