It’s difficult to have to be mindful of what you eat all the time. However, whether one has kidney disease or not, mindful eating is something that is beneficial for one’s health. Even for someone without kidney disease, one cannot eat with reckless abandon any and all foods available. There is bound to be some reason for eating one particular food in moderation. In addition, different people may have diet recommendations given to them because of other health conditions they have. So it would be difficult to generalize specific foods “safe” for someone to eat without knowing the specifics of what other condition one has or one’s labs indicate. It would be good to follow up with your renal dietitian to discuss and tailor food options that would be safe for you. That way eating will hopefully not feel as restrictive or overwhelming. You can speak with your primary care provider or nephrologist to request a referral to follow up with a renal registered dietitian so that he/she can review your labs and your specific needs. You can also find a renal registered dietitian on the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics website. You have the option of searching for an in-person or telehealth dietitian, as well by location and specialty (Kidney Disease and Renal).
Is there anything I can eat with “reckless abandon” and not worry about what’s in it?
