For Professionals

I am in stage 3b and have calcium stones and cystine stones. What kinds of food would be the best for me to eat?

Nutrition for kidney stones and kidney disease is very different for each person. Kidney stone nutrition is dependent on your kidney function, and typically is personalized to your 24-hour urine test results. The most common recommendations are to limit salt to 2,300mg per day, make sure you are eating enough calcium (1,000-1,200mg per day for most) and to drink 3 liters of fluid each day (may be less if you are on dialysis). For many, a moderate protein intake is also recommended – but not a “no protein” diet. In general, focus on eating fresh, non-processed foods that are primarily plants such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains and some plant proteins.
