For Professionals

Do I need to take vitamin, mineral or herbal supplements? Are they safe?

There is no nutrition or herbal supplement that everyone with kidney disease needs to take. For people on dialysis, your dietitian will probably recommend you take a special vitamin formulated just for dialysis patients. Your doctor might also recommend vitamin D or iron. Nutrition and herbal supplements are not regulated by the FDA, and might have harmful ingredients in them, especially for people with kidney disease. Always let your doctor or dietitian know about any nutrition or herbal supplements you are taking.
