Do I need to monitor how much fluid I drink if I am on dialysis?

Yes, while on dialysis, you should have an idea of how much fluid you consume. One way to help determine this, especially in the beginning, is to track how much fluid you are consuming daily. Fluids include beverages, but also include foods that are liquid at room temperature including: popsicles, ice, soup, ice cream, pudding and yogurt.

Work with your dialysis team for the specific amount of fluid that is best for you, remaining kidney function and type of dialysis impact how much fluid you can consume. Too much fluid can cause cramping at dialysis, difficulty breathing and swelling.
