For Professionals

Are steaks ok for people on a renal diet, if so, what are the best please?

Like all animal protein foods, steak has a lot of protein in it. It also tends to be high in saturated fat and cholesterol, which, when eaten in excess, can be harmful to your heart. If you are not on dialysis, it is a good idea to follow a low or moderate protein diet. So, steak and other animal protein foods like chicken, turkey, fish and seafood should be eaten in small portions (3-6oz). Plant proteins like beans, nuts, seeds and lentils tend to be much easier on your kidneys. Enjoy these foods in place of animal protein at meals! If you are on dialysis, you have higher protein needs. So, steak and other animal protein foods can be included more often, in larger portions. Ask your dietitian about your protein needs and which foods are best for you!
