Start by following a heart healthy eating pattern such as the DASH diet. The DASH diet is the gold standard. It focuses on fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins including beans, and low salt. Since you are on home dialysis you can have more potassium in your diet, which opens up more healthy food options like many vegetables. Work closely with your dialysis dietitian to help you safely include some of the higher potassium foods (vegetables and beans) into your diet. The DASH diet lifestyle also includes daily activity. Talk with your doctor about how to safely incorporate daily activity into your routine. The American Kidney Fund has some great recipes and information on how to start a DASH Diet lifestyle.
I recently had quadruple bypass & doing home dialysis, how should I be dieting to reduce future risk to my organs?
